Senior Capstone Schedule


The Senior Capstone is more than a trip.  It represents an integral part of the educational experience of a CLPS student in fulfillment of our Profile of a Graduate - Christ-Centered Relationships, Effective Communicators, and Critical Thinkers.  The Senior Capstone offers our seniors a unique and unifying cultural, social, and intellectual experience of the arts, history, nature, and science.

GENERAL REMINDERS
Packing and Travel:

​1.  DEPARTURE AND ARRIVAL PROCESS. 
- TBD
2.  PACKING PLAN. 
- Each student will be able to bring a carry-on piece of luggage (Dimensions = 
22 inches X 14 inches X 9 inches (56 cm X 36 cm X 23 cm) and a backpack on the airplane. We will not be checking any bags at the airport.  All students should bring a personal water bottle.
- Reminder:  With carry-on, all liquid containers must hold 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less and no more than a total of 1 total liter of liquids. In addition, storing your liquid contents in a clear bag is strongly recommended as it will assist in moving through security in a timely manner. It is also recommended that you purchase travel-size toothpaste, etc. to pack for the trip.  Sunblock will be purchased in Flagstaff and be available to students throughout the trip.
- Dress code for the trip is the same as the school House retreat. 
Out of Uniform Guidelines are as followed:  Modesty is expected. Shorts must reach fingertips for both genders. Shorts must be past fingertips at the shortest part of the garment with shoulders relaxed. No tight athletic wear. No tight-fitting skinny jeans (please use discernment) or jeans with holes. Leggings may not be worn as pants. Closed toed shoes only. No shoes with heel over 1 inch​. No sleeveless shirts. No transparent clothing. No clothing with inappropriate emblem, insignia, wording or picture.
- In April, the average high is 59 degrees and average low is 29 degrees in the Flagstaff and Grand Canyon areas.  The average high in Sedona is 76 degrees and average low is 45 degrees, while Phoenix is 86 and 59 degrees respectively.  Packing to dress in layers is best.  Also, bringing one pair of good walking/hiking shoes is all you will need.  Casual attire will be sufficient for all events on this trip, so there is no need to pack special dress-up clothing.  We will be outdoors, so we encourage you to plan accordingly - hats, water bottle, backpack. 
- As a general rule, people tend to overpack. Please keep in mind that our lodging will have a washer and dryer, should we need to use them, and we will provide laundry detergent, should a student need to wash clothes.
3.  STUDENT Driver's License/ID:  Each student MUST bring his or her Driver's License/ID for the trip. Without a Driver's License/ID, the student will not be able to fly.
Food and Spending Money:
- All meals will be provided on the trip. If, for example, we stop at a gas station for gas, and a student wants a coffee or specific snacks, the student will need to pay for such purchases with their own money. 
- Additionally, if students want to purchase clothing articles or souvenirs on the trip, they would need to pay for those purchases with their own money as well. 
- As such, there is no expectation that students will need additional spending money for the trip, but many students have brought some additional money in order to purchase extras with respect to snacks/drinks or to purchase items.
- Any and all dietary restrictions need to be communicated to Mr. Henry, Dr. Henry, Dr. Martin, and Dr. Tarpley as soon as possible.
Communication and Safety:
1.  Students must be in groups of at least three at all times.
2.  We will be in outdoor areas that require the students to abide by all regulations, including staying on marked paths at all times, for safety reasons. 
3.  Boys and girls are never to be in each other's rooms.
4.  Lights out in the rooms will be at 12:00 am.  We will have long days, so rest is important.
A Few Specific Digital Device Policies:
1.  We are making an exception to our smartphone/cell phone policy in that students are allowed to have their smartphones/cell phone with them during the trip, if they have one.
2.  That being said, the school policy on social media still stands:  no posting on social media is permitted for the duration of the trip.  Respect for and compliance to this policy is expected as this trip is a school sponsored event and any posting of a school event is a representation of the school itself for which the school has the final decision for all public communications.  However, students will be allowed to take pictures with their phones.  
3.  We do expect that students will be engaging each other, the chaperones, and the events and not their smartphones during the trip.  If we see excessive use of smartphones, we will ask the students to limit engagement.  The trip is a time for the seniors to be together and engage the opportunities the trip provides to them, not to be distracted by and spend time with their smartphones.
4.  Communication with parents will be available at all times via student smartphones (except when we are in areas in which no phone reception is available); however, again, we ask that communication be as needed such as the end of the day.  If you have a question or concern regarding the trip itself at any point, we strongly encourage you to reach out to Mr. Henry, Dr. Henry, Dr. Martin, and Dr. Tarpley using our contact information on this page.
Student Coursework:
1.  Below is the specific communication provided to teachers by the administration.  
Communication Begins:
During the Senior Capstone, teachers of mixed classes may approach the week in the following way:
a. Teachers may create a mini-unit for that week that covers self-contained content within that week only and that content may be assessed during that week for a grade for the non-seniors in the class. An example would be creating an engaging project or mini-unit that culminates in a double formative assessment.
b. Teachers may not present material during the Senior Capstone week that seniors are responsible for upon return from the Senior Capstone.
c. Teachers may not provide additional review time during Senior Capstone week for upcoming assessments of any form that will take place after the Senior Capstone.
Communication Ends.
