Spring One Act Play Festival Friday, April 22, 2022 Three Shows - Free Admission
Please read the synopsis of each show before attending.
Charlotte's Web at 6:00 pm Based on the classic novel by E.B. White, Charlotte's Web is the story of Wilbur, a runty, farm pig saved by the compassion of friends from a terrible fate. The actors play multiple, dynamic characters and "weave" a plan to save Wilbur through tricking humans (who are not as smart as bugs!) by a series of descriptive words that the barn spider, Charlotte spins into her web. This enduring tale of friendship, sacrifice and salvation has been a favorite for generations! This show is appropriate for all audiences. There are themes of farm life and death. The Ugly Duckling at 7:00 pm This play, which does not include a single duck, was written by A.A. Milne, the famous author of the Winnie the Pooh series. This play has been a classic for years, spinning a tale of a far away kingdom, a beautiful princess magically cursed to be seen as ugly to all but her true love, mistaken identity and some of the wittiest dialogue on the stage! Join is as these characters weave a double plot to get the Prince and Princess to the altar. This show is appropriate for all audiences, although the dialogue may be difficult to follow for the youngest audience-goers. Magical themes are included in the plot. The Boys Next Door by Tom Griffin at 8:00 pm This show is a crowd-pleasing classic, appropriate for most audiences. This show is recommended for 9th graders and above. Parents are welcome to accompany younger children (under 14) but are encouraged to talk to their children about the theatrical representation of persons with disabilities, and the best ways to be respectful audience members in this production. Actors will be representing intellectual and physical disabilities through body and voice. Out of respect for the representation of the people for whom the characters in The Boys Next Door were based, and the deep desire to avoid situations that would make fun or light of their circumstances, the following guidelines will occur for this show:
All students and children (8th grade and below) must be seated with adults for this production. Students may not be dropped off for the show.
High school aged students will be expected to not form a “student section” for the show as this is a family event.
Persons who are not able to respond as respectful audience members will be asked to exit the theater.
Synopsis: Four men with intellectual disabilities live in a group home under the supervision of an earnest, but increasingly "burned out” young social worker named Jack. Norman works at the doughnut shop and can't stop eating the products! Lucien P. Smith has the mind of a five-year- old but imagines that he is able to read the hard books he carries around. Arnold is a hyperactive, compulsive chatterer who suffers from deep-seated insecurities and a persecution complex. Brilliant Barry has schizophrenia and is devastated by the unfeeling rejection of his brutal father, and fantasizes that he is a golf pro. Sheila is Norman's girlfriend who meets him at the Wednesday night dances and with whom Norman wishes to start a life. These characters unfold in a series of vignettes that provide a window into the life of others who have difficulties but ultimately want the same things and life as everyone else.
